Junior Cycle Science Curriculum
The Junior Certificate Science curriculum is designed to develop students’ scientific knowledge, practical skills, and critical thinking abilities. It provides a strong foundation in the core areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth & Space while encouraging curiosity and a hands-on approach to learning.
Key Areas of Study:
· Biology – Exploring living organisms, ecosystems, the human body, and genetics.
· Chemistry – Investigating materials, chemical reactions, acids and bases, and the properties of matter.
· Physics – Understanding forces, energy, electricity, speed and density
· Earth & Space – Studying the structure of the Earth, the moon, weather and climate, the solar system, and the universe.
Practical & Investigative Skills:
Students engage in experiments and scientific investigations to develop skills in observation, measurement, data analysis, and problem-solving. Practical work is an essential part of the curriculum, reinforcing theoretical concepts through hands-on experience.
Assessment:
The Junior Certificate Science examination consists of:
· A written exam covering all areas of the curriculum.
· Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs), where students conduct scientific investigations and research.
This course encourages students to think critically, work collaboratively, and develop an appreciation for the role of science in everyday life. It also provides an excellent foundation for further studies in Senior Cycle Science subjects
